Monkey Birthday Party

It's no secret I am HUGE fan of Paperglitter parties. So, this time around for Avery's 8th birthday we threw together the Monkey Party designed by no other than Linnette over at Paperglitter.

I decided {as a thrifty mama} to go with the basic monkey kit only because I also have a son...who does not like girly stuff like hair bows and flowers.  This decision allowed me to also use this kit for him should he decide to "Go Bananas" for his own birthday later this year.  And, for once - my blah-blah brown walls actually accompanied the overall party decor quite nicely.

For the occassion, I got straight to baking - but I didn't go overboard...just four different treats for the guests to enjoy.

Like banana cupcakes with swiss meringue buttercream...

Cool grease proof cupcake wrappers were purchased from Golda's kitchen, the colours lent themselves perfectly to the overall scheme and were decked out with a combination of rounds from the party kit and monkey heads {Monkey'n Around} from Party Stuff.

A two tiered cake with polyer clay monkey keepsake topper and a colour palette drawn from the colours in the kit (plus a pale blue as our extra accent colour)...

The leaves and number 8 on the cake were made from a blend of fondant and gumpaste so they would firm up {and were made 3 days in advance of the cake being assembled). Then, using an edible food writter, the leaves were detailed to reflect the leaf decor in the kit.  The monkey was also made by me {something else I've been doing for a while...okay - years...like about 20!}

Bakerella inspired monkey cake pops with paperglitter flare ... designed by MOI!

and of course...SUGAR COOKIES - no party here goes without sugar cookies. We jazzed up half of them with 3/8" satin tied bows for the little ladies and the gents got the original monkey.

I tried using a new technique I picked up from one of my other favorite reads on the net which made for perfect outcomes like the sugar cookies.

Over at The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle, Callye posted a tutorial using a "push pin" technique to accurately mark flat iced cookies so that the details would be picture perfect {in her example she uses LEGO man heads to illustrate this method}.  I think I did pretty darned good if I don't say so myself :). Although it was slightly time consuming, it was well worth the work, as the results couldn't have turned out any better in my opinion. Originally, I began by using a quilt marker pin with a large round head on it, but after a while my fingers began to get sore from gripping something so small...so I thought outside the box - "what else do I have that could poke holes into the icing?" .  Then it came to me....my paper perferator from my makin' memories scrapbook kit. It resembled a stylus, was much easier to hold and gave just as accurate marks in the royal icing.

After the cookies were finished some were bagged and topped with the treat bag toppers from Linnette's party kit.

Water bottle labels were repurposed into bubble wraps...

Cupcake topper rounds were reduced in size at printing and turned into tokens to adorn the cutlery wraps with pipecleaner monkey tails, and the treat bag flags were re-invented into soda pop bottle decor. Avery scattered the leftover tokens all over the table like confetti! What a smart cookie!

and the bunting banner was sewn together for durabilty and was a huge time saver. {I stacked the words with the last letter on the top of the pile from the sentiments to ensure the banner did not come out backwards}.  We couldn't have "YADHTRIB YPPAH" now could we?  Then we inserted some leaf cutouts randomly and a monkey too for added cuteness and personality.

More leaves were fastened to the other trays and displays to pull through the theme.

And we can't forget the treats for the little monkeys that were at the party! I used the editable text fields to personalize each treat box for all the children that attended, and added eyelets with a grosgrain ribbon handle for easy carrying on the way out.

...and don't forget the sugar cookies!

Although the party took quite a few hours to put all together {from strategically planning the baking projects to print runs for the week leading up to party day} it was well worth the effort. I thouroughly enjoyed doing it {when do I not?}.

Enjoy!

Baker Gets Burned

So, I am usually sleeping by now but tonight I am fueled with a little different insight into what I do and why I do it.  Baking is my passion, I love to dream and create new works of edible art that bring smiles and aw to their consumers faces. But, it saddens me to find out that my artwork has been taken from me {it's rightful owner} without request or permission granted first.  Going through school it was ingrained in me about piracy when writing literary papers.  CITE,...CITE ...CITE.  I just expected that all other people out there too would be as honest as me.

Today, for some reason a conversation I had with an acquaintance surfaced in my mind about an incident she found herself faced with.  Her artwork was being plagiarized and pawned off as somebody Else's, no credit given and no permission to use it asked.  It baffled me to try and wrap my head around what people were thinking, and tried to place myself in her shoes. What would I do if it were me?

Today, I found out.  IT ROYALLY SUCKED!  I felt anger, sadness, stupidity...It made me question everything I do, and whether or not to persevere and continue to pursue my passion of baking in general, but more specifically decorative cookie making.  It was a gamble, I posted some of my cookies...and they got into the wrong hands.  It was the hands that followed that made me sad though. There didn't appear to be any questions asked as to where the image came from, I just happened to locate it myself in a google search. And now I wonder how many more cases like this are there.

I have put up a guard surrounding my personal creations, with limited visibility to a community I believe will truly respect my cookies as my personal property and will use them as inspiration and inspiration only.  They will not reproduce them for resale to make a quick buck, and they will certainly consider asking permission first to use a design before proceeding to bake them. And they will always give credit where credit is due.

So, if you are a flickr fan of my stream and you can no longer access some of my images it is for this reason.  I have left available some of the items that are visible here on my blog.  I apologize for this inconvenience but I believe deeply in my heart it is what I need to do to help protect my livelihood and passion.

Thank-you for your understanding. I hope you will continue to read my posts and be inspired by what I have to offer to you.

Happy Heart Day!

Wow! I am actually ahead of schedule with regards to this post - as promised to you in my 2012 list of things to do {let's just hope this is a glimpse of what is still to come for timelyness for the rest of the year!}. Looking back at Carolyn from Occassional Cookies and her savy ways to reinvent the basic sugar cookie into whimsical creations I felt it my due diligence to make up heart themed lollies too to compliment her line up of Christmas trees, wreaths, pumpkins and apples etc.  and let's not forget  her Halloween themed lollies {now a close second since I made these cute hearts}.

Holy Holly Sleighbells Santa!

Last post I mentioned I was going to take a run at the holiday lalaloopsy doll and turn her into a cookie. I think like digital scrapbooking, it's better to go big or go home when making my "graphics".  Holly turned out okay, not to my total liking but I got a smile out of my daughter...so mission completed.  I snapped a picture of her to share before my husband tried to eat her with the last of our milk!  Guess I better go shopping, wouldn't want to have to leave dear old Santa high and dry.  Maybe this year he could do with a steaming hot night cap with a little extra spirit if you get what I mean?

Fa La La Loopsy Cookies

Pardon my hiatus I took following Ethan's birthday blitz... I had a series of Christmas Craft shows to get through. I must admit I was not in the crafting mood... BAH! Did I just say that? What is wrong with me?  No, I did not fall or hit my head...my husband wonders about that most days because of all the crafts. I just wasn't feeling it this year. BUT - now that the sales are done, my ideas are flying wildly and my doodle books are filling up with new ideas to share with you over the course of the next year!

With Christmas right around the corner and a request that came from the Toronto area for some Lalaloopsy cookies I started looking online for more cookie inspiration, what could I try.... and then I found her!

Hello Holly Sleighbells

So STINKIN' cute!  And of course NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA!!!! GRRRR...Hello!  Up here in Canada, NORTH of you, we like Lalaloopsies too.  Regardless - I am not bitter, it's the holidays and I am HAPPY because I am going to turn her into a cookie, and her little reindeer too.

Perhaps I should take a rip at this guy as well, inspired by Marion over at Sweetopia... a little something for my guys to enjoy as well this holiday season.

Happy Baking!

Ethan's Spooky Boo-tique GRAND OPENING

Phew! What a crazy busy last couple of days, but well worth every second spent. Today, we celebrated my son's fifth birthday with a bunch of his friends right here at home.  Previously I have led up to the making of the bootique and now I can finally reviel it to you! After seeing the sweet shoppe that was designed by Linnette over at Paperglitter and checking out her photos she posted I was able to draft Ethan's very own store front... BUT in Halloween decor to compliment his costume party.

I was featured on PaperGlitter!

Not to sound like some crazy creepy stalker type...but Linnette {over at Paperglitter} featured me, ME!  {shriek! - I'm so geeky!} And with this great honour she has set the stakes EXTREMELY high for me now...as a feature in her post today she highlighted my little guy's halloween birthday party from last year! It's all good...birthdays...they happen once each year...at the same...which means  WE'RE HAVING ANOTHER HALLOWEEN PARTY this weekend! Simmer down! I promise I will share with you once it's all done and I have fixed up my pictures.  I have been working on Ethan's concept for a while now (which you already now), prebaking a lot of the goodies because {Yes, I am crazy..but that's besides the point} I like to do all the treats myself!

Big Sugar Lollipops

Back in the summer time my daughter decided we  she should sell cookies alongside her brother's lemonade stand, and I tried to bake up something fun all while replenishing the lemonade that was like a nonstop tap out on our front lawn.  I did manage to get the cookies baked, but not before they closed up shop for the day and so to my husbands dismay he was forced (once again) to eat sugar cookies..he was really upset {what a struggle to get him to take one for the team...;)}

Monday September 19 - National Talk like a Pirate Day?

Really? Have you heard of such a thing???  Just by chance my son wore his "Ahoy Matey" shirt  {we found on a trip to Target this summer} which caught the eye of my neighbour.  It was she who informed me of such a day...and then a second reminder to confirm it on Moshi monsters.  Who knew!!   Now, had I been in the loop sooner I could have made up something fun to celebrate the occassion IN ADVANCE.   I guess I could go and put on my eye patch, black out some teeth and tell my wee scallywags to walk the plank before I blow! Shiver-me-timbers!! {is that right?}.  Hey I never did come in first in any races, but at least I finished them!  Pirate cookies we shall have...when? I don't know, but they will get made.

Kawaii Cupcake Cookies

About a year ago a friend asked me to design some cupcake cookies for her daughter's birthday party...and of course I accepted the request.  I had an idea in mind...which I ended up doing but wasn't overly happy with the result.  If only I could wind back time and make her these ones instead, everything would be so darn sweet.

Lemonade & Lollypops

This past week my children were hounding me to do "something"  fun, so they set up shop at the end of the driveway with their own Lemonade stand.  {A Wednesday afternoon mind you, but they were out there}. Two pitchers of fresh squeezed lemonade and $4.00 profit later they were as pink as punch to have refreshed the neighbourhood.

Keeping up with SweetSugarBelle... {Yeah Right!}

Yet again I have failed to make this blog a regular part of my weekly doings.  February was a long time ago since my last post...and no there is no REAL excuse for having such a lapse in dedication to posting pictures or brief entries.

I did have a spring craft show at the end of April to which I was preparing several pieces of felt food, donuts, lemon meringue pie, cupcakes, carrots, apples and bananas. Sandwiches, Nut-free PB & Jelly, pancakes...the list went on and on.

Monster Buffet

So, I am back....a month has past since my last post ! YIKES!  A lot has happened since then, craft show #1 {the 3 day blitz} was a HUGE success and the preparations for my son's 4th birthday party were completed and in the bag.

I took to baking up some special treats for my guy to share with his little buddies and any of their mom's who chose to stay and play. It seemed a perfect fit hosting a Little Monster Party seeing as a halloween celebration had just taken way at school on the same day. What better way for the kids to enjoy their costumes a little  bit longer.
The transformer, the hamburger, the old western ranger...all suited up and ready for danger!
Goobly gook, and gross gumbo-
 everybody's tummies started to rumble-
To the kitchen we went to face our lunch
Who wants more ghoulish punch?

Don't Worry... Be Happy!

My daughter started grade 1 yesterday, and was a little nervous about how it would all go. What better opportunity to bake a little sunshine for her to lift her spirits!
